Internship Program for American Sign Language Interpreters

Requirements: Although anyone may apply, priority consideration will be given to students enrolled in an Interpreter Training Program fieldwork or practicum class.

Location: San Diego

Compensation:

Phase I:

  • 30 hours of observation of qualified interpreters and/or supervised teaming with qualified interpreters.
  • These 30 hours are to be completed with no monetary compensation.
  • After the 30 hours of observation, the intern will be evaluated in order to advance to Phase II.

Phase II:

  • 10 hours of supervised teaming with certified staff interpreters.
  • Paid an hourly rate with a 2-hour minimum per job.
  • After the 10 hours of supervised teaming, the intern will be evaluated in order to advance to Phase III.

Phase III:

  • 30 hours of supervised teaming or assignments to be deemed appropriate.
  • Paid an hourly rate with a 2-hour minimum per job.

Internship Frequently Asked Questions

Application Process: You must fill out an internship application, submit two (2) letters of recommendation, a resume with cover letter, and a videotaped interpreting sample. The videotaped Interpreting sample should be at least 10 minutes each: ASL to English and English to ASL. Send these materials to:

NIS is an Organizational Member of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and we have highly skilled RID certified interpreters on staff.
